These ELS detectors can help identify samples that cannot be found using UV detection. ELSDs require a clean inert gas to spray the liquids used to wash the components under test. This is where nitrogen plays a vital role. The components to be tested are carried by nitrogen gas to create a spray, which is then heated to vaporize.<\/p>

Compressed air can sometimes be used in ELS detectors, but this requires an additional step to remove any traces of oil or water that may remain. This is why it is preferable to use a clean inert gas such as nitrogen.<\/p>

As a general rule for gases used for laboratory instruments, the higher the purity, the lower the impurity levels that can cause problems with the instruments and the results of measurements and analysis.
